Device-mapper and LVM roadmap: Improving storage efficiency and scalability

von Alasdair G. Kergon (Red Hat)

Thursday, 24.05.2012, London, 16:00-17:00 Uhr

I will discuss several features that are being added to LVM and device-mapper to facilitate the more efficient use of storage and better performance and scalability.

Thin provisioning allows delayed allocation of a pool of storage space shared across many Logical Volumes. Space is not assigned to any particular Logical Volume until it is needed to satisfy real write requests. Snapshots of thinly-provisioned Logical Volumes are more flexible than snapshots of normal Logical Volumes. These let you save storage space when running several similar virtual machines, for example.

The scalability of LVM itself is also receiving a lot of attention at the moment. Amongst other improvements I will discuss is the introduction of the metadata daemon, lvmetad.
