- LinuxTag is May 11 to 14, 2011, in Berlin - Call for Papers extended to February 8, 2011 - Focus: E-publishing, Android and server consolidation - 200 talks wanted on all aspects of open-source software

Berlin, January 7, 2011. The 17th edition of LinuxTag, Europe’s leading trade fair and conference on open source in all its ramifications, will take place May 10 to 14, 2011.

Experts can submit proposals for one of the 200 conference presentations at LinuxTag until February 8. The program committee has selected twenty themes for this year's talks, and will consider proposals in other areas as well. Key areas include e-publishing, the mobile platforms Android and Meego, and server consolidation. Classic tracks are also on the agenda at LinuxTag, such as kernel and network topics. The upcoming introduction of IPv6 is expected to attract special attention.

According to the British market research company Canalys, the smart phone operating system Android achieved a worldwide market share of 25.5 percent in the third quarter of 2010. In early December, the head developer of Android, Andy Rubin, tweeted that 300,000 mobile phones were being shipped every day with the open operating system developed under the auspices of Google. Accordingly, the organizers have made Android a focus topic of this year's conference.

The LinuxTag Association, whose volunteers have organized the conference at LinuxTag for 15 years, works with experts and experienced users who report on all kinds of trends and innovation in the Linux and free software field. Frameworks are the foundation for nearly all applications, and social networks are one of the most important types of applications. Web deployment is concerned with how applications can be maintained and updated.

Linux for Businesses

In times of unsure growth, many IT managers are asking how they can make their infrastructure scalable and at the same time more efficient. This requires robust virtualization technology as well as management and monitoring instruments. LinuxTag demonstrates the leadership of Linux and open-source software. Businesses and organitations are on hand to report on their successful open-source infrastructures at LinuxTag.

For Administrators and for the Community

A new addition to the LinuxTag program is a lecture series in which IT experts discuss specific innovations in important software packages. The concise format allows administrators to hear directly from the lead developers what features are offered by new major releases and which upgrades will benefit them most.

Communities weigh in at LinuxTag. The new „Cross-Desktop/Cross-Distribution“ track is where developers present proposals that concern not just a specific user interface or Linux flavor, but cooperation between different projects. Cooperation is also an underlying issue in subjects such as data privacy, social concerns, and not least, whistle-blowing. As new media are increasingly used to expose corrupt and illegal acts, LinuxTag welcomes discussions of transparency and disclosure, methods and principles.

For a complete list of the suggested subject areas, and the conditions for presenters, see the Call for Papers (http://wiki.linuxtag.org/w/vp:Call_for_Papers).

Prospective speakers can submit their proposals at the Virtual Conference Center, https://vcc.linuxtag.org/, until Febrary 8. The VCC site is protected with a certificate from the CAcert project. Submit a concise abstract of the proposed talk and a brief description of yourself on or before the deadline through the VCC website.

In 2010, nearly 12,000 visitors from companies and the community came to LinuxTag. 43 companies and 75 free projects presented the state of the art and the capabilities of free software and operating systems. At the same time, the international conference, with over 300 presentations and high-profile keynote speakers from the international open-source scene, clearly demonstrated why LinuxTag is the leading event in its field.
