Software creators and hardware laboratories display a wide range of innovations for companies and private users – 15th LinuxTag to take place from 24 to 27 June in Berlin

Berlin, 11 June 2009 – Once again, “where .com meets .org“  is the slogan to which this year’s LinuxTag in Berlin remains true. From 24 to 27 June 2009 a total of 68 companies and 66 independent projects are presenting new hardware and software solutions as well as innovative services.

"As Europe’s leading meeting place of the industry LinuxTag benefits from a first-class reputation. Visitors to the exhibition can look forward to numerous product debuts and taking a behind-the-scenes look at future developments. While the IT industry’s major players are lamenting a sales slump, open source companies and independent projects are taking the opportunity at LinuxTag to introduce their innovations to a wide audience", said Nils Magnus of the board of LinuxTag e.V.

Exhibitor focus: new business applications

The 134 exhibitors attending LinuxTag represent all the opportunities which free software has to offer. Among the numerous innovations are security packages for mobile users (GeNUCard from GeNUA), a software suite for network-wide security assessment (Open Vulnerability Assessment System) and open Linux Smartphones (ROAD handyPC). New versions of familiar infrastructure solutions also await visitors, including the opsi 3.4 desktop management system, e-mail appliances from Sendmail and Exceed onDemand 7®  from the Open Text Connectivity Solutions Group, which makes it possible to use UNIX applications on Windows and Linux workstations. Based on MPEG4, the future standard for audio data compression , the French startup VisionR is developing new and interactive value-added services for internet radios.

Despite this diversity the focus of the product innovations due to be shown at LinuxTag is clear: evolutionary development of applications for companies. The following companies have announced they will be showing new applications or upgrades of their software solutions for companies at LinuxTag:

  • ALTIC: Spago BI business intelligence solution
  • Federal Office for Information Security: Kolab groupware with KDE PIM client contact for Mac OS X
  • c.a.p.e. IT GmbH: all-in-one customer solution with an in-house development OTRS::CiCS::ITSM
  • Core-Techs: Quotero 1.0 document management system
  • eXo Platform: Enterprise Content Management System
  • Open-Xchange: groupware with functions for consolidating contacts from social networks
  • SoIT: DragonFly customer management system
  • Sourcegarden: ProjectSimple project management
  • XWiki: knowledge management with XWiki

Independent projects demonstrate creative potential

The 66 projects attending are also responsible for numerous innovations and evolutionary developments. Products on display by the openSUSE project include openSUSE 11.1, SUSE Studio, openSUSE Build Service and a demo version of Moblin. There will also be a preview of openSUSE 11.2. Moblin is an optimised Linux software platform for netbooks equipped with Intel Atom processors and other portable user devices. On 27 June openSUSE Day will be taking place at LinuxTag, where presentations and workshops will revolve around the openSUSE project, distribution and the community.

The Typo3 project is not only showing its stable Version 4.2 of its popular content management system, but also displaying Version 4.3 at the stand, which is currently under development. Web developers will be particularly interested in the FLOW3 development framework. A preview can be had of Version 1.0.0, which allows maintenance of JSR-283 compliant content repositories.

x2go has announced it is showing two new products at LinuxTag. x2go is an independent, large-scale terminal server project and provides KDE control centre modules for administration uses. Session suspending makes a desktop or programme session “portable” using live authentification from workstation to workstation. Compression techniques and the use of only one port (ssh) means this can also be achieved over the internet.

3/ XBMC is a cross-platform, open source media centre for the living room PC. Regardless of whether Linux, Windows, Mac OS X or Xbox is in use, it combines a fully adaptable, attractive user interface with high-performance playback. XBMC lets the user browse through his own music, video and image content in the comfort of the home. An XBMC home theatre version is being shown at LinuxTag to demonstrate options for use in clubs and lounges.

About LinuxTag

LinuxTag is Europe’s leading event for Linux and free software, and a joint platform for open source projects in German-speaking countries, in Europe and overseas. The four-day event brings together producers, supporters, software products and communities. In addition to a programme of papers comprising well over 200 topics, as well as its own Business & Public Authorities Conference, LinuxTag traditionally also hosts an exhibition, in which open source companies and projects take part. LinuxTag differs from other trade fairs in that it cooperates closely with the community and exhibitors. The association LinuxTag e.V. is the non-commercial sponsor of the event and co-organises it with Messe Berlin GmbH. More information is available at www.linuxtag.org
