LinuxTag 2007 continues to consolidate its position as Europe?s leading event for Linux and free software at its new location in Berlin. The programme of conferences at this combined trade show and convention is still expanding, with 30 sections featuring over 200 papers during the four days of this event. At the same time more than100 companies and projects will be presenting their latest developments in Linux, and in free and open source software.

LinuxTag 2007 is being supported by three of the leading open source suppliers, IBM, Novell and Sun Microsystems. Together with the parallel IT users? trade show IT Profits (www.it-profits.de), LinuxTag will be introducing a Career Lounge for the first time, for newcomers to the industry and for IT specialists (www.berliner-karriere-lounge.de).

 

IBM presents its "Open Business Client" for its staff

Among the developments being presented by IBM in Berlin will be its new Linux Desktop, which has been designed for the staff of the world?s largest IT company (Hall 12, Stand 51). The "Open Business Client" is based on the Red Hat Enterprise Linux Workstation and is augmented by Lotus Collaboration together with various security programs. IBM developers will be making this presentation on the second day of the trade show (Thursday, 31 May) during the Convention for Business and Public Sector Authorities (Room 1: Karlsruhe, 12 midday).

The IBM stand will also be focusing on the subjects of "IBM in Second Life", "Linux with Cell", "IT Consolidation" and the range of training and services for Linux that is available from IBM. Michael Maier, Director of the Public Services and Pharmaceutical Division and Head of the IBM branch in Berlin, welcomes the decision to relocate LinuxTag from Wiesbaden to the German capital. www.ibm.com/de

openSUSE, openSUSE Day, Open Enterprise solutions from Novell

Novell will be using this event to introduce its current community distribution openSUSE 10.2 as well as providing a preview of the version 10.3 which is due for release in September (Hall 12, Stand 52). During the openSUSE Day on the first day of the trade show (Wednesday, 30 May '07) the presentations by Novell will include new developments for Linux on laptops, for openSUSE on Playstation 3 and for photo management in Linux distributions (Room 5: Wiesbaden, 10 a.m.- 6 p.m.).

Novell?s latest SUSE Linux Enterprise Server, its Xen virtualization system and its SUSE Linux Enterprise Desktop are all intended for the professional user. Sun Microsystems presents the fastest compilers for Linux

Sun Microsystems will be showing the fastest C, C++ and Fortran compilers for Linux at Europe?s leading event for open source software (Hall 12, Stand 77).

Sun is also presenting its latest C, C++ development environment Sun Studio for Solaris and Linux. The Unix operating system OpenSolaris is at the heart of Sun?s community commitment. During the OpenSolaris Day (Friday, 1 June) the developments being displayed by members of the Sun team will include Solaris on laptops and links between the Solaris kernel with Debian applications and the Nexenta operating system (Room 5: Wiesbaden, 10 a.m.- 6 p.m.). Other developments from Sun which can be found at LinuxTag include the packet administration Sun Update Connection-Enterprise, the open source office suite OpenOffice.org and the Sun Ray virtual display Client. de.sun.com

Industry association Linux-Verband exhibits with Kaspersky Lab at LinuxTag in Berlin

In accordance with past practice the association representing Linux firms in Germany (www.linux-verband.de) will be exhibiting with seven companies on its combined stand at LinuxTag in Berlin. The Russian security specialist Kaspersky Lab (www.kaspersky.de) will also be represented here together with its distributor 8-Soft (formerly Bitbone AG) in order to present its business solution Kaspersky Open Space Security (Hall 12, Stand 56).

Other exhibitors that will be featured on the Linux association stand include ATIX (a supplier of Linux-based cluster and storage solutions), tarent (a specialist in Java applications on mobile devices and Enterprise workflow management with OASIS BPEL-Standard), univention (the supplier of the comprehensive Linux solution Univentation Corporate Server), Intevation (a strategic IT consultant and project manager for the use of free software) and Zarafa (the supplier of the Zarafa collaboration server for Outlook Clients). www.linux-verband.de

Main highlights from the world of free software

Web-based applications form one of the main themes of this year?s LinuxTag. For example visitors will find products for the web framework Ruby On Rails (Infopark AG, Hall 12, Stand 38) and for the web application framework RAPPTOR (th data GmbH, Hall 12, Stand 33).

The LinuxTag Conference on Saturday (2 June) will address the subjects of Development (Room 2: Stuttgart) and Web 2.0 (Room 3: Berlin). Virtualization is another of the main topics being dealt with at LinuxTag. Among those using the server solution Xen will be Novell with the SUSE Linux Enterprise Server (Hall 12, Stand 52) and BSD Projects (Hall 14.1, Stand 14).

Another important aspect of LinuxTag is that of free learning software: a display devoted to Education (Hall 12, Stand 80) will include a classroom featuring the special distributions Skolelinux and Debian Edu. Visitors will also be able to see the online learning platform Moodle (also Hall 12, Stand 80), edubuntu as a terminal server solution for schools, and linux4afrika (both Hall 12, Stand 36). Geo-information projects will be represented by their own combined displays. They include OSGeo, OpenStreetmap and FreeGIS (Hall 14.1, Stand 16).

In the Multimedia field the projects MythTV and vdr (both Hall 12, Stand 93) will show how Linux can be used to make hard-drive recordings in the home. Secure home banking with MoneyPenny 2.0 is being demonstrated by a technical college, Fachhochschule Südwestfalen (Hall 12, Stand 101). Those who want to take more of a risk will be interested in the project FlightGear, offering virtual flights in a genuine pilot's seat (Hall 14.1, Stand 15).

In the future such advanced graphics applications will be available on free graphics boards. One example is provided by the prototype of an OGD (Open Graphics Development Board) which can be seen on the FFmpeg/MPlayer stand (Hall 12, Stand 93).

At LinuxTag 2007 the worldwide community of developers will be presenting the latest versions of the most popular GNU/Linux distributions, including ArchLinux 2007.05, BackTrack 2 - Security Live CD, CentOS 5.0, Debian GNU/Linux 4.0, Debian Edu, Fedora 7, Mandriva 2007 Spring, NetBSD 4.0, OpenBSD 4.1, ubuntu/kubuntu/edubuntu 7.04 and Skolelinux.
