The leading European event for Linux and free software is an approved training event and its advanced training programme is intended for advanced Linux and Unix users in business, science and public administration.

LinuxTag tutorials from 29 to 31 May

The one- and two-day training seminars will address subjects of particular interest to users, such as the clustering of file servers using Samba, single-sign-on with Kerberos and LDAP for user administration. In this year?s tutorials, which will be dealing with operating systems, the emphasis will be on the installation and administration of Xen servers and the use of OpenSolaris architectures, including Zones, ZFS and DTrace.

More information about networks will be provided by the practical seminars on network monitoring using OSS tools, on network optimisation with IPv6, on security applications such as intrusion detection and prevention (IDS/IPS), and firewalling with the aid of OpenBSD Packed Filters. There will also be training in programming with the web framework Ruby on Rails, best practices for Perl and automation with Shellscripting.

The participation fee for the LinuxTag tutorials is 500 EUR for the first day and 300 EUR for each subsequent day. A ten per cent discount will be granted to members of the German Unix users? association GUUG e. V. Linux competitions for user groups and experts

The "Linux-Mega-Quiz" being held by LPI e. V. during this year?s LinuxTag will now also include a computer quiz for users groups. This is an opportunity for individuals and user groups to test their current knowledge on all aspects of the Linux operating system. The open competition on the LPI e. V. stand will feature technical questions based on LPI examinations. The MAX21 group (www.max21.de) is providing a special prize for the person who reaches the highest stage or who achieves the top score, in the form of the offer of a job and an invitation to attend an interview.

The prizes for the LPI Linux competition on the Berlin Exhibition Grounds are worth a total of 10,000 EUR. The group winners in the LUG competition will be invited to take part in an LPI course for examination candidates, for up to ten participants, sponsored by Open Source Certification (www.oscert.eu). A number of prizes will be offered to the individual competition winners, including places on a Samba training course, donated by SerNet (www.sernet.de), and five days of LPIC-2 training in Berlin, donated by Heinlein Akademie (www.heinlein-support.de).

LPI Day and workshops for IT professionals

During the LPI Day on 2 June leading Linux experts will be presenting practical expertise on current issues in the world of Linux. Highlights will include an appearance by Matthew Rice, Director of Product Development for LPI Inc. The Canadian systems administrator and programmer will be speaking about the contradictions and possibilities inherent in the collaboration on joint projects between technicians and non-experts.

The Berlin specialist Peer Heinlein will begin the LPI Day in the morning by presenting Unix and GNU tools for simplifying server administration. They can be used to remove many of the complications associated with logfile evaluations and system monitoring. He will be followed by the Steinfurt-based expert Ralf Spenneberg, who will be presenting the configuration of Samba servers as primary domain controllers. This enables Samba to be used by Windows and Linux clients alike for the purposes of user authentification. Full programme details for the LPI Day can be found at www.linuxtag.org/2007/de/conf/events/vp-samstag.html.

On Friday, 1 June, LPI e. V. will be providing supplementary workshops on many aspects of LPI certification. During the morning, under professional guidance, interested specialists will be able to prepare questions about future LPIC certification. The most interesting questions will be examined by the Linux Professional Institute and may possibly be included in future examinations. During the afternoon practical advice will also be available about helping LPI students with their preparations with the assistance of virtual programs.
