LinuxTag 2012: deadline extended for programme of papers

06.02.2012 12:51

• Submission deadline 29 January; Call for exhibition projects expires mid-March

Berlin, 24 January 2012 – Candidates have until this coming Sunday to enter their suggestions for the programme of papers at LinuxTag 2012. The move to extend the deadline by five days came in response to several speakers’ requests, Marko Jung and Nils Magnus, co-chairs of the programme planning committee, said on Monday. For fifteen years LinuxTag e.V., which organises the independent programme of papers, has drawn on the expertise of the community, developers and projects.

"As in every year we have received a great many suggestions in the run up to the fair", says Marko Jung. "Thus there were a large number of fascinating suggestions for system managers and administrators, including for virtualisation, high availability, storage concepts and monitoring." Many of the submissions directly addressed current and future developers. "The Linux kernel itself is a very popular subject for papers“, says Nils Magnus and highlights how participants will benefit from the event: ”Several kernel programmers have already announced their participation and aim to let visitors share their experiences. This kind of first-hand information cannot be gained from studying e-mail lists and provides an outstanding opportunity to acquire in-depth knowledge and advertise one’s own market value with both current and prospective employers."

Interesting papers on mobile operating systems in demand

The programme committee is still looking for contributions on certain topics to round off the papers at the event. Marko Jung: "We would like more papers on telephony and innovative hardware. Anyone who has ideas for mobile operating systems such as Android, Tizen and MER or is familiar with Linux-based ARM, Atom or Fusion applications should definitely get in touch with us". The committee is also looking for specialist applications, in particular for special user groups.

Suggestions have already been received on the subject of colour management for graphics programs or for use in a university clinic for metabolic diseases.

Candidates have only until 29 January 2012 to send their suggestions to https://vcc.linuxtag.org/

Call for independent projects at the exhibition

In addition to the programme of papers and a separate Business & Public Authorities Conference, LinuxTag traditionally hosts an exhibition featuring projects and companies associated with the Open Source sector. For many years numerous independent projects have presented their ideas here and these are the driving force of the Open Source community. LinuxTag e. V. is supporting independent projects who want to be there in May by offering free stands. Candidates interested in entering their projects have until mid-March to submit their ideas for a stand as part of the call for projects.

Elke Moritz and Jacqueline Rahemipour, two team leaders, had this to say about this section at the exhibition: "We look forward to seeing already popular projects such as those on distribution or Linux desktops, as well as to suggestions for completely new stands", said Elke Moritz, while Jacqueline Rahemipour added: "We help initiatives to introduce themselves to audiences at LinuxTag.” Getting to know users and other developers in this way is very important, particularly at the start of a new project. For this reason the project team welcomes suggestions for applications and tools for designing and training purposes.

Candidates have until 20 May 2012 to send their suggestions for projects to the same address at https://vcc.linuxtag.org/. New projects can be registered at the vCC by clicking on the Project tab, which opens a second tab (CfPro) listing full details of CfPro.
