LinuxTag 2012: Policy panel on current controversial issues of the network policy

Members of the Bundestag, network activists and pirates are going to discuss on the 23. May at the Berlin fair grounds

Berlin, 14. May 2012 – At the high-profile panel discussion on the 23. May it will be about controversial issues of the network policy at the LinuxTag in Berlin. This way four members of the Commission Inquire of “Internet and Digital Society” of the German Bundestag have accepted the invitation (1). The group of the members of the Bundestag Dr. Peter Tauber (CDU), Lars Klingbeil (SPD), Konstantin von Notz (Bündnis 90/Die Grünen) and Jimmy Schulz (FDP) is complemented by the net activist Markus Beckedahl and Alexander Morlang, who represents the Pirate Party in the House of Deputies in Berlin. Organiser of the panel is the LinuxTag, which will be moderated by Markus Feilner, depuity chief editor of the Linux Magazine.

The discussion will focus on the role of Open Source and Linux in public facilities and the attitude of the parties. Apart from that, it will also be about how Open Source helps to freedom in the net. The participants are going to explain their positions on fundamental rights and data protection, such as the retention or the federal Trojan. The current discussion of the copyright also concerns many Linux users and developers and is therefore particularly important. Last but not least, the politicians are going to be asked about their opinion on the forefront of public administration for the Open Source commitment.

Nils Magnus, program director at the LinuxTag association, explains: “The more open standards and open source play a role in the policy, the closer these topics move. This is why we want to include them for the visitors. As the LinuxTag takes place in natural proximity to the federal polify, the panel discussion build a beautiful bridge between the community and policy makers.”

The hour-long discussion is going to take place on the 23. May 2012, at 5 p.m. in Room London (Hall 7.1) at the Berlin fair grounds.
