von Henning Westerholt (Kamailio project )
Wednesday, 09.06.2010, London, 11:30-12:00 Uhr
This talk gives an overview about designing and implementation of geographical redundant Voice over IP systems with the Kamailio/ sip-router server. Kamailio is a flexible SIP server with good performance and is freely available as Open Source. It offers a wide range of modules to support many different usage scenarios. The talk presents performance requirements and key concepts in the design of a geographical redundant VoIP system. Furthermore a few interesting new developments in the upcoming Kamailio version 3.1 that are valuable especially for carriers are presented.
The talk starts with an overview about the 1&1 voice over IP backend, some performance requirements for carrier grade VoIP networks and real-world measurements. Then are some key concepts for building a geographical redundant system are presented. This are for example partitioning of the user base and network load with different means like anycast IP and means of maintaining a shared database state for subscriber data and registration informations. Finally some common problems in building bigger VoIP clusters and solutions approaches are discussed.
The second part of of the talk highlight some important features and new development in the upcoming Kamailio 3.1 release, with a special focus on the carrier problem space like availability and maintainability. Finally the current state of the integration of Kamailio in the sip-router project is presented and a outlook to the new development plans for the version 3.2 is given.
This talk is no introduction in voice over IP systems or the SIP protocol, some basic knowledge in this areas is assumed. Knowledge of IP networking basics and the related software products or projects in VoIP systems would be also useful.
