MeeGo - Linux for Mobile Devices

von Dirk Hohndel (Intel Corporation)

Friday, 11.06.2010, Berlin I, 12:00-13:00 Uhr

In February 2010 Nokia and Intel announced to combine forces and merge their separate mobile-focused open source projects (Maemo and Moblin) into a joint project that aims to develop an outstanding OS for a broad range of devices, from phones to netbooks to consumer electronics - and many adjacent markets.

This presentation will walk the audience through the architecture of MeeGo. From kernel through libraries and middleware all the way to GUI framework. We'll explain the rationale behind the sample user experiences and show how consistent user interaction design is the basis of a successful device.

A big focus of the presentation is to show the audience how to get involved, either as end user, as application developer, or as someone building devices based on MeeGo. We'll talk about the supported platforms, the hardware requirements, the base software stack that runs on the device as well as the software development environment that allows developers to easily and quickly create compelling applications for MeeGo.

Depending on how much time is allocated to this presentation, all this can happen at different depth - either as a whirlwind overview, or as a more measured presentation that delves into the different topics. This can include discussions on technical details around the default software stack, about the related app stores, all the way to the development of an application from scratch that can be installed and run on a MeeGo device.

I expect that this presentation will be interested to a broad subset of the LinuxTag audience. The architecture and vision behind MeeGo doesn't require a lot of in-depth technical understanding. As we go into more detail regarding implementation details (and into the actual implementation of an application), basic understanding of software development will be helpful.
