This talk looks at the advantages and disadvantages of three different techniques for dynamic content updates: short polling, long polling, and WebSockets. These techniques allow web developers to provide users with a fluid experience that keeps pace with their expectations

Scott Mattocks is a principle software architect for OnForce, Inc where he conducts final code reviews and works to design scalable architectures for new features. His most recent project with OnForce is Waterspout, a highly scalable WebSocket and polling server written in PHP. Scott is also an author of the PHP-GTK documentation and "Pro PHP-GTK".
