Linux Virtualization technology alternatives

von Werner Fischer (Thomas-Krenn.AG), Kir Kolyshkin (OpenVZ project)

Donnerstag, 31.05.2007, Saal 4: Kaiserslautern , 13:30-15:00 Uhr

Different virtualization approaches (emulation, hypervisor-based, operating system-level) and their pros and cons are outlined. Details of the OS-level virtualization approach are given, using OpenVZ as an implementation example. Operating system features -- virtualization, isolation, resource management and checkpointing -- are described, as well as user-level tools. Short live demo is given. Possible usage scenarios of virtualization are presented. The current status of containers group (containers@osdl.org) activities, and information merging containers features into mainstream is given.

Suggested audience: advanced Linux users, system administrators, kernel developers, everybody who's using or interested in using any type of virtualization technology.

Werner has written a cluster HOWTO for OpenVZ, available at http://wiki.openvz.org/HA_cluster_with_DRBD_and_Heartbeat.
Before his current job, Werner worked at IBM in Germany and Austria. Together with other IBMers he wrote two IBM Redbooks in the HA and storage area. Werner holds a graduate degree in computer and media security from the University of Applied Sciences of Upper Austria in Hagenberg.
