Open Source development for Linux based mobile devices with Qtopia and Greenphone

The position of Linux in the embedded devices is very strong already today. Last year was full of events showing that Linux becomes strong on mobile devices and mature enough to attract a broad spectrum of applications developers.

Trolltech, known from Qt and in the KDE project, plays a key role in embedded area. Trolltech also started to actively support Open Source development for and of Qtopia – a Qt-base application framework for mobile devices. Qtopia Phone Edition focuses on Linux based mobile phones. Recent GPL releases of Qtopia Phone Edition Community SDK for the Greenphone are first contributions from Trolltech to strengthen the role of Open Source in Linux-enabled mobile phones.

This talk will inform attendees about the latest and hottest news about the Qtopia platform, the reference development device – the Greenphone, and its SDK. The talk will contain a short practical tutorial about the use of the SDK, typical steps over the whole development cycle, available package and tools. Tutorial will contain a live-demo of the SDK and the Greenphone itself.

The talk will also inform about opportunities for individual developers and companies to contribute to the platform and internal activities at Trolltech to support this works.

The talk will be held in English with possibility to ask questions and discuss in German.

Über den Autor Vladimir Minenko:

Vladimir Minenko studied Computer Science in Russia, Germany and U.S.A. with a Ph.D. degree in Computer Science from University of Ulm, Gremany. His experience includes research on distributed multimedia and mobile systems, Java, C++ SDK for mobile devices, software project management as well as UI and operator customization as his recent works at Siemens Mobile Phones and BenQ. Currently he works as senior engineer in Professional Services in Trolltech GmbH, Munich. Vladimir is an avid windsurfer, snowboarder and skier with interests in music, digital photography and video editing.
