Full Disclosure for the Linux kernel

The Linux kernel is as vulnerable as any other piece of software. No additional security measure or counter measure can protect it. And it is the last line of defense of a GNU/Linux operating system. The Linux kernel is an open source project and has thousands of developers around the world and even more lines of code than any other open source project. This is a great strength when it comes to development, but in security terms it can become your biggest nightmare. This talk will give an overview on how the open source community handles security issues. It will show good and bad. For demonstration a handful of security issues from the last 12 month will be shown in detail with their impacts.

In addition to the open source community view, it will also show how commercial Enterprise distributions handle security issues around the Linux kernel and how the full disclosure paradigm applies to them.

This talk will give an open and honest view on what is going on when it comes to security issues within the Linux kernel.

Über den Autor Marcel Holtmann:

Marcel Holtmann ist der Maintainer des offiziellen Linux Bluetooth Stacks BlueZ und arbeitet dabei am Kernel Code so wie auch an der Bluetooth Library und den Tools. Des weiteren kümmert er sich auf den BlueZ Mailing Listen um die Fragen und Probleme der Bluetooth Anwender und unterstützt andere Open Source Projekte, die die Bluetooth Technologie integrieren wollen. Zusammen mit Jean Tourrilhes betreut er ausserdem das OpenOBEX Projekt.

Neben der Weiterentwicklung von BlueZ beschäftigt er sich auch aktiv mit den Problemen und Fragen der Bluetooth-Sicherheit. Zusammen mit Adam Laurie und Martin Herfurt leitet er den Security-Table auf dem Bluetooth UnPlugFest.
