von Mike Melanson (Loose Confederation Of Multimedia Hackers)
Freitag, 01.06.2007, Saal 3: Berlin, 11:00-12:00 Uhr
Multimedia has gradually become on integral part of the typical computing experience. Open source software has been required to keep pace with the fast-changing technology algorithms and requirements. Fortunately, FFmpeg has risen to meet that challenge.
FFmpeg is an all purpose multimedia processing backend software library. It is sort of a stealth project in that it has slowly permeated through dozens of multimedia products, both free and proprietary, open and closed source. FFmpeg is also known or suspected to drive the most popular video sites on the internet today. In the glamorous technology field of multimedia, FFmpeg has become one of the sexiest pieces of software around.
This paper will focus on the story of FFmpeg and how it inadvertently grew up to be such an influential piece of software: How FFmpeg started, what its growing pains and challenges have been, and what challenges the project continues to face. Further, the paper will also discuss how FFmpeg hopes to grow in the future.
Über den Autor Mike Melanson:
Mike Melanson is an open source / free software developer from the United States. His primary interest is studying, documentating, and understanding all multimedia technology that was, is, or ever will be used and archives detailed information on the subject at the Multimedia Research Institute:
An unintended side effect of this multimedia hobby has been building an expertise in binary software reverse engineering. Mike researches new, more advanced, efficient methods for extracting hidden knowledge from binary programs. This research is based around the idea that the computer should do the hard work. This fledging site describes new experiments in software reverse engineering.
Further, Mike has a blog describing multimedia technology and reverse engineering research:
