Best practices of implementing a RESTful architecture in an open source web application

von Suresh Shamanna (Liferay GmbH), Jorge Ferrer

Freitag, 01.06.2007, Saal 1: Karlsruhe, 15:00-16:00 Uhr

Summary With so much hype around service-oriented architectures, it is tempting to use traditional (and heavy) SOAP-based web services to communicate among services and to surface data to the presentation layer, particularly when using portal frameworks, enterprise service busses and other heavy-duty infrastructure packages.

This session aims to show that REST is a compelling and lighter alternative to SOAP in many cases. We will demonstrate best practices of implementing REST principles in a web-based Java application (specifically a JSR168 portal framework). We will also:

• Briefly explain the ideas behind REST • Discuss appropriate uses for REST vs. SOAP • Identify limitations of the REST architecture • Consider how REST combined with JSON enables rapid application development by bypassing the Struts layer • Explore how REST helps align an application with Web 2.0 principles
