Best Practices for Open Source Projects

von Ross Turk (SourceForge.net)

Freitag, 01.06.2007, Forum Messehalle, 12:00-13:00 Uhr

The SourceForge.net database contains nearly 150,000 unique open source projects with various goals and complexity, and user communities of all sizes. In this collection, there are clearly both successful projects and unsuccessful ones - but what makes a project succeed?

Ross Turk, SourceForge.net Community Manager, will use the SourceForge.net project database to demonstrate common behaviors and characteristics of successful open source projects. These characteristics will be analyzed to provide a list of practices that have been proven to draw interested users into a project's community, and win them over for good.

Topics will include:

• SourceForge.net Usage Statistics o Visitors and page views o Project metrics

• How do you know when a project has been successful?

• What makes those projects successful?

• What can new projects do to improve their chances of success?
