Turning Linux into a Realtime Kernel

von Thomas Gleixner (linutronix)

Donnerstag, 31.05.2007, Forum Messehalle, 10:00-11:00 Uhr

Many people thought that transforming a General Purpose Operating System into a Realtime Operating System would be impossible. A small group of core kernel developers, led by Ingo Molnar, have proven that this can be done nevertheless.

The realtime preemption patch has matured and found its way into real world products already, so it's time to look at the internals. The realtime preemption patch core changes include priority inheritance support, high resolution timers, threaded interrupt handlers, and sleeping spinlocks.

Aside the technical insight into the core changes, the talk provides information about the goal and motivation of the realtime preemption project and examples of real world use cases.
