GNU/Linux stack Localization to right-to-left languages: Persian Language Experience

GNU/Linux application stack has been localized to many languages. Most of this languages are Left-to-Right GNU/Linux application stack has been localized to many languages. Most of this languages are Left-to-Right (LTR) languages that the localization can be done simply for them. As matter of fact, there are a huge number of people who are using Right-to-Left (RTL) languages such as Persian, Arabic and Hebrew. There are some inherent difference between RTL and LTR languages in GNU/Linux application stack. This paper provide an in-depth description of the conducted work for Persian Language during last four years. The presentation starts with the basic concepts related to FOSS localization and followed by the Iran FOSS project objectives. Different phases of the localization of GNU/Linux, development methodology and obstacles of the project progress and attained results are also covered during the presentation. Culture/capacity building activities will also be explained through the talk. The paper concludes with stating the current status and the future plan of the project.

Über den Autor Mohammad Khansari:

Mohammad Khansari is the director of Iran Free/Open Source Software (FOSS) National project (formerly Persian GNU/Linux Localization) at Advanced Information and Communication Technology research Center (AICTC) of Sharif University from Jan. 2003 (start of the project). At the same time, he is a PhD candidate and lecturer at Computer Eng. Department at Sharif University of Technology. He has more than 13 years working experience with GNU/Linux. He has two years administration experience with Beowulf architecture, a clustered GNU/Linux system for research in parallel processing. He was also Solaris and Informix database administrator and X Window programmer for more than three years. He and Prof. Dr. Rabiee are the starters of the GNU/Linux localization and National Free/Open source project in Iran at the government level from Jan 2001. He had a short-time research fellowship from DAAD, Germany and some papers in International conference. He has given many lectures on FOSS and GNU/Linux localization topics in Iran and International conferences such as United Nation Expert meeting at Geneva (2004) and FOSS2005 in Syria, United Nation WSIS in Tunisia (2005) and FLOSSWorld in India (2005, LinuxAsia 2007 (india) . He is the co-author of three books with Prof. Dr. Rabiee; “Introduction to Free/Open Source Software”, “introduction to Free/Open Source Software Licensing” and “The Open Standards” and co-translator of “Business and Economics of Linux and Open Source” in Persian. Moreover, he is FOSS consultant to the Iran Telecommunication Research Center and secretary of Software working group of High council of IT.

Narges Zali is a graduate of Sharif University, Iran. After graduation she joined the Advanced Information and Commnication Technology research Center (AICTC) of Sharif University. She has passed different courses in GNU/Linux and Free/Open Source Software and works at AICTC as researcher in different aspects of FOSS with a focus on localization for educational sector using Open Document.
