The modern Enterprise has high demands on its telephony infrastructure: Multiple locations, mobile employees. Today, flexible communication solutions can be built based on the free "Asterisk" software PBX. The talk discusses the possibilities that are opening up in the field of software applications.

Integrated (communication) applications allow virtual reunification of the distributed enterprise and provide an efficient work and communication environment. The presentation will show what Open Source applications and tools may be useful and what interfaces can be used to tie them together.

Examples show that integrating Asterisk with (Jabber) instant messaging could provide a means to monitor availability information and phone status of team members in other locations. Intelligent call routing offers one-number reachability. Business software, if accessible from anywhere through the browser, could be enhanced with telephony features. For server based telephony integration the presenter has implemented an Asterisk version of the JTAPI interface for Java Enterprise applications.

Über den Autor Jens Wilke:

Jens has been involved in open source development since 1992 when he joined the GNU Forth compiler team. After finishing school in 1994 he started a company based on sales and consulting in the telecom/datacom field. During his 12 years of professional work he gained experience in the implementation of protocol stacks, embedded operating systems, Linux kernel device drivers, database engines and learned how to build enterprise applications. The led to a relaunch of his business as a software engineering company. Jens is fluent in C, Java, Forth and PHP and can also communicate directly with a postscript printer. He adamantly refuses to use Perl or vi, though. Should there ever be a prolonged power outage, Jens will probably be seen playing basketball or the drums.
