Open Source Test Tools for Telephony

von Olivier Jacques (Hewlett-Packard)

Dienstag, 02.05.2006, Raum 1A-2, 16:30-17:15 Uhr

Testing is an important part of any software development. This is especially true for telephony software where a phone call can save a life. But testing telephony software and especially voice and video (the base for IMS) over IP software and solutions is challenging. This touches so many domains and can be seen under so many views that it could be tempting to barely test before releasing a software.

The presentation will go over all the Open Source test tools available to test telephony products. The tools are classified in categories: client tools (audio/video soft phones, sms clients), protocol monitoring/analysis, network impairment emulation, traffic generators, media (voice and video) quality, security. For each tool, a short description, tool's activity as well as a field of application will be provided. Several use cases of a typical telephony application to be tested and the appropriate tools will be presented.

Über den Autor Olivier Jacques:

Working on telephony since he started his career, Olivier has demonstrated his testing skills on a wide range of communication technologies - from plain old telephone service to voice and video over IP and IMS.

Currently working at HP, Olivier is in charge of the test tools used in the HP OpenCall division. He also contributes to standard bodies like ETSI in order to define performance benchmarking methodologies for IMS. The author is the main SIPp developer (http://sipp.sourceforge.net/), the most popular SIP and RTP Open Source test tool, and an active contributor to Ethereal (http://www.ethereal.com/). In his spare time, he is working on several other Open Source projects relating to voice and video, including VDR Video Disk Recorder (http://www.cadsoft.de/vdr/).
