Phonon and NMM -- Multimedia Architectures for the Desktop and Beyond

von Michael Repplinger (Saarland University), Marco Lohse (Saarland University), Matthias Kretz (KDE Project), Bernhard Fuchshumer (Motama GmbH)

Samstag, 06.05.2006, Saal 6.2, 10:00-11:00 Uhr

An important building block of a modern desktop environment is a multimedia architecture. The main requirement for such an architecture is to provide an easy-to-use interface for applications to integrate general multimedia functionality, such as media playback.

Phonon (formerly known as KDEMM) aims at fulfilling this role for the upcoming KDE 4. Internally, the Phonon architecture will be based on available full-featured multimedia frameworks. One back-end will be implemented for NMM, the Network-Integrated Multimedia Middleware. As a unique feature, NMM allows for controlling and connecting local and remote multimedia devices and software components. This kind of network transparency enables new application scenarios for the desktop that extend the traditional ways of interacting with multimedia: Media content can be played out on remote devices seamlessly, handed over between running applications, or presented to all connected users in a network simultaneously and synchronously.

This talk and accompanying paper will present the concepts of both Phonon and NMM, reflect the current state of their integration, and discuss the resulting new features for the KDE user.

Über den Autor Michael Repplinger:

Michael Repplinger is a software architect and developer for the Network-Integrated Multimedia Middleware (NMM). He has been involved in the NMM project since 2000. He holds a M.Sc. in Computer Science from Saarland University, Saarbrücken, Germany, and currently works as a research assistant and PhD student at the Computer Graphics Lab at Saarland University. He is also co-founder and co-CEO of the spin-off company Motama that provides services and support for developing distributed multimedia applications based on NMM.

Über den Autor Marco Lohse:

Marco Lohse is chief software architect, developer, and project manager for the Network-Integrated Multimedia Middleware (NMM). He has been involved in the NMM project since 2001. He holds a PhD in Computer Science from Saarland University, Saarbrücken, Germany, and currently works as post-doctoral researcher at the Computer Graphics Lab at Saarland University. He is also co-founder and co-CEO of the spin-off company Motama that provides services and support for developing distributed multimedia applications based on NMM.

Über den Autor Matthias Kretz:

Matthias Kretz has been an active KDE developer since 2000.

He worked on serveral components of the KDE desktop. His main interest from the beginning was multimedia on Linux. To get started with KDE development he worked in the KDE graphics module as the maintainer of KView as well as contributing to KDE core components from time to time.

In the last few years he has shifted his focus towards aRts and KDE multimedia and is one of the chief architects of the upcoming KDE 4 multimedia framework.

He is currently in his fourth year as a physics and computer science student at the University of Heidelberg.

Über den Autor Bernhard Fuchshumer:

Bernhard Fuchshumer is a final-year student of Software Engineering at the Upper Austria University of Applied Siences in Hagenberg, Austria. He has been involved in the NMM project since 2005. He is the lead developer for the Phonon/NMM integration and works part-time for Motama, a start-up company that provides services and support for developing distributed multimedia applications based on NMM.
