GPLv3: internationalisation and limited patent retaliation

GPLv3 tackles a number of areas in which GPLv2 could be improved. Among them are internationalization and ways of dealing with different threats from software patents.

One of GPLv3's most daunting challenges stems from the GPL's worldwide success. Developers from all over the world choose to release their programs under the very same GPL. They expect the GPL to be enforceable, to be an effective tool to prevent their programs from being used to deprive users of their freedom to use, study, modify and share software. GPLv3 improves its wording in a few areas, striving to be an internationally enforceable copyright license, one that can be used without any changes in many different legal systems, including differences such as those present between copyright and droit d'auteur.

Software patents are always a threat to Free Software, one that the GPL cannot fully address, and so GPLv3 does not even try. GPLv3 does, however, include some language meant to prevent people who distribute software under the GPL from taking away the freedoms the GPL grants by means of patent litigation or licensing.

Außerdem referiert er bei vielen internationalen Veranstaltungen zum Thema "freie Software", und nimmt oft auch an deren Organisation teil.
