EGEE: The e-Science production Grid in Europe

von Torsten Antoni (Institut für wissenschaftliches Rechnen, Forschungszentrum Karlsruhe)

Samstag, 06.05.2006, Saal 7, 16:00-17:00 Uhr

The EGEE project is in charge of operating and further developing a production quality Grid for e-Science. This infrastructure currently consists of more than 23000 CPUs distributed across 180 sites. Among the main customers of this powerful Grid are the four experiments of the LHC, a particle accelerator being built at CERN (Geneva, Switzerland) and scheduled to start taking data in 2007. Operating and making efficient use of such a huge collection of computing resources requires specialized software, called "middleware", which sits between the operating system and the users and their applications. This Grid-middleware layer is in charge of simplifying the access to the resources, presenting the user with a virtualized view of the infrastructure. The middleware used by the EGEE Grid is called gLite, and it is being developed and improved by the project. Although some portability efforts are underway, most of the EGEE production grid runs on Linux, because it provides a cheap and reliable platform. In this talk we will present the EGEE grid infrastructure and the middleware at its heart.

Über den Autor Torsten Antoni:

Torsten Antoni studied physics specializing in astroparticle physics at Karlsruhe University. He graduated with a diploma thesis on experimental cosmic ray physics. Subsequently, he did his Ph D with a thesis on muons in cosmic ray air showers at the University Heidelberg, Germany, earning his degree in 2003. Since 2004 he is working at Forschungszentrum Karlsruhe, Germany in the field of user support in the grid environment in the framework of the LCG and EGEE projects, now as manager of the user support activities.
