CUPS-1.2 -- Was bringt die neue Release?

CUPS 1.2.0 adds nearly 100 changes and new features over the last CUPS 1.1.23 release. The most important ones are:

+ higher performance for production-grade print servers. (servers hosting thousands of print queues can greately benefit from the newly supported Unix Domain Socket support for local, non-network client printing)

+ easier installation (more reliable auto-discovery of locally attached [USB, parallel] printers; SNMP auto discovery backend for network printers; easier to use printer installation wizard)

+ improved web interface (adds easy to access options like "Allow remote administration", "Allow users to cancel any job (not just their own)" and "Share published printers connected to this system" should allow even unexperienced users to setup their system as needed)

+ better security (auto-SSL supports http as well as https connections on the same port; encryption setup has become much easier; all authentication operations are now encrypted by default, no password will ever go over a http-only connection; "RunAsUser" is dropped)

+ more power to power users (each printer can be shared and published separately; cupsd.conf is editable via the web interface now)

+ new: support for IPP notifications (configurable notification triggers for any event that may occur, e.g. to mail the administrator if a queue goes down) + new: support for fine grained security "policies" (all IPP operations for job or printer management can be separately assigned to users, authentications schemes or allowed IP addresses, etc.)

Über den Autor Till Kamppeter:

Till Kamppeter hat in Theoretischer Physik promoviert. Während seiner Promotion war er Systemadministrator für Unix und GNU/Linux für die Theoretische Physik in Bayreuth. Dabei ist er zunächst mit Beiträgen zu X-CD-Roast und später mit seinem ersten eigenen Projekt XPP zur freien Software gekommen. XPP hat ihn dann zu Mandriva nach Paris geführt, wo er seit August 2000 für Drucken und Digital Imaging in Mandriva Linux verantwortlich ist.

Sein derzeitiges Hauptprojekt ist die Web-Site linuxprinting.org mit der umfangreichen Druckerdatenbank und der Foomatic-Software. Er hat das System wesentlich verbessert und damit hat es sich zum Standard zur Druckertreiberintegration in allen wichtigen GNU/Linux-Distributionen entwickelt. Er arbeitet auch in der Open-Printing-Gruppe bei FreeStandards.org mit, ist Administrator bei EBV4Linux.de und hat sehr viele Vorträge und Präsentationen auf Veranstaltungen zur Freien Software gehalten.

Im April hat der von ihm organisierte OSDL Printing Summit in Atlanta (GA) in den USA stattgefunden.

Kurt Pfeifle arbeitet als Systemspezialist bei der Danka
Deutschland GmbH. Hier leistet er Consulting, gibt sein Spezialwissen zum Thema "Drucken im heterogenen Netzwerk" in
Trainings weiter und beschäftigt sich mit IPP (Internet Printing
Protocol) & Migration heterogener Netzwerke zu Linux Printservern (mit Hilfe von CUPS und Samba).

Er arbeitet an den Webseiten von Linuxprinting.org und KDEPrint
mit und unterstützt in diversen Newsgroups Anwender bei
Druckproblemen. Die beiden Druckkapitel der neuen "Samba-3 HOWTO
Collection" stammen hauptsächlich aus seiner Feder.
