OpenOffice.org 2.0: changes and challenges

Discussion of some of the changes in OpenOffice.org from the 1.1 series to 2.0 from a developer point of view. Reducing the footprint and launchtime through stripping unused code, global object removal and using the g++ visibility features. Explanation of the openoffice.org build system and code submission process. Addressing the challenge of controversial java components in OOo through gcj. How you can help.

 

Über den Autor Caolan McNamara:

Born 76, attended University of Limerick, Ireland. Wrote libwv (mswordview), libwmf and related subprojects to allow reading of Microsoft Word documents under linux in the late 90s. Joined Sun in StarOffice Hamburg in 2000 to work on the StarOffice msword import/export filters just as it was being released initially as OpenOffice.org. Transferred back to Dublin in 2001 to continue the same work. Then took up new position at RedHat still as an OpenOffice.org developer in 2004. Married 2005.
